I understand that comedy roles are drying up and so some funny-men are having to turn to more serious roles in order to keep the pay-checks rolling in, but surely there are better options out there for them than the likes of this. Kevin James at least gets a fun role to play around with (which he actually does a half decent job of in spite of the script) but poor Joel McHale gets absolutely nothing whatsoever to work with. His role is as straight-forward and pointless as they come. Times must really be tough for comedy actors at the moment.
The problem with this film is that it centres around its most unlikeable character. The character of 'Becky' is very early on shown to be quite detestable (the film even goes out of its way to show us this for some reason. Then the movie decides she will be the best choice to be our hero. The most likeable character in the film is actually one of the villains ironically. That was a character I could have got on board with. The movie unfortunately had other ideas however.
The film tries to make up for its script deficiencies by including some ultra-violence, partuclaly in the second half of the film. It gets really excessive actually, but the problem is that it isn't done in a fun or clever way like some other similar films manage, but more in a gratuitous and hard to watch way. It also does a very poor job of utilising characters. I mentioned McHale's wasted appearance, but also there are a black mother and son who literally just sit on a couch the entire film. 'Becky' at least tries hard and while it rarely works, in the few moments that it does can be quite fun. I can't recommend this one though I'm sad to say.
